What Is Polyolefin Adhesive?

In the adhesive industry, Polyolefin is commonly abbreviated as PO. This category includes a wide range of formulations. APAO (Amorphous Poly Alpha Olefin) is one type of amorphous polyolefin used as a base polymer in certain hot melt adhesive formulations.

The base resin provides a useful starting point when selecting an adhesive, but it does not fully define the product's performance. Two adhesives within the same PO family may still differ significantly in viscosity, open time, setting speed, and final bond strength.

What Are Polyolefin Hot Melt Adhesives Used For?

Application What to Evaluate Before Selecting an Adhesive
Paper box and carton sealing Paper grade, surface coating, carton flap design, and machine compression time
Bonding plastic surfaces Type of plastic, surface condition, and adhesion test results for the specific adhesive grade
Assembly of flexible materials or industrial components Flexibility of the adhesive bead, applied load, and end-use temperature
Filter manufacturing Bonding location, operating environment, and performance requirements of the finished filter

For PP (polypropylene) or PE (polyethylene) substrates, testing should be carried out on the actual production material, including printed or coated surfaces where applicable.
It should not be assumed that every PO adhesive will bond effectively to every type of PP or PE simply because both the adhesive and substrate belong to the polyolefin family.

For filter-related applications, see our guide to adhesives for the filtration industry for adhesive selection at different production stages.

Technical Specifications to Check

The table below can be used to prepare technical requirements when discussing an application with an adhesive supplier. Specific values should always be obtained from the technical documentation for the exact product grade.

Specification How to Interpret and Apply It
Application temperature Use the temperature range specified by the manufacturer and confirm that the application equipment can operate within that range
Viscosity The measurement unit and test temperature must be provided for meaningful comparison
Open time The period during which the two surfaces can still be joined after the adhesive has been applied
Set time Should match the required compression or holding time and the speed of the production process
Bond heat resistance Evaluate under actual load, temperature, and expected service duration
Density Useful when converting adhesive consumption between volume and weight
Bond durability after storage Recheck bond performance after the product has been exposed to the heat, cold, or humidity expected in actual use

Note: Application temperature, softening point, and the service temperature of the finished bond are different parameters. One value should not be used as a substitute for all three.

Should You Choose PO or EVA Hot Melt Adhesive?

When comparing PO and EVA adhesives, test the candidate products under equivalent conditions: the same substrate, bond design, application method, and acceptance criteria.

You can also review our guide to EVA-based hot melt adhesives when comparing these two adhesive families.

The evaluation should cover three main areas:

  • Bond quality: Initial adhesion, bond durability after storage, and any deformation of the bonded materials.

  • Production performance: Adhesive bead consistency, suitability of compression time, and whether defects occur during continuous operation.

  • Total operating cost: Adhesive consumption per acceptable finished product, reject rate, and equipment cleaning time.

A product with a lower price per kilogram does not necessarily result in a lower cost per successfully bonded carton or finished product.

How to Test Polyolefin Hot Melt Adhesive on a Production Line

  1. Prepare samples of the actual production materials, including coated materials or materials that may vary between suppliers.

  2. Record the initial application temperature, machine speed, adhesive quantity, and compression time.

  3. Run the trial within the operating ranges recommended by both the adhesive and equipment manufacturers.

  4. Evaluate the bond after it has stabilized and again after exposure to the expected storage or end-use conditions.

  5. Finalize the adhesive grade together with the validated process parameters and retain the test information for future batch comparison.

Avoid changing several process parameters at the same time, as this makes it difficult to identify the cause of any change in performance.

Safe Use and Storage of Polyolefin Hot Melt Adhesive

  • Molten adhesive and heated equipment can cause burns. Use suitable eye protection and personal protective equipment appropriate for the task.

  • Control operating temperature according to the manufacturer's instructions, maintain adequate ventilation, and avoid inhaling fumes generated by overheated adhesive.

  • Store the adhesive in clean, sealed packaging under the conditions specified on the product label. Protect it from dust and other contamination.

  • Keep packaging intact during transportation. Specific transportation requirements should be confirmed using the documentation for the individual product.

  • If molten adhesive contacts the skin, cool the affected area under gently running clean water. Do not peel off adhesive that remains attached to the skin. Seek medical attention for burns where necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions About Polyolefin Hot Melt Adhesives

  • Can Polyolefin Adhesive Be Used at the Same Temperature as My Current Adhesive?
Not necessarily. Check the technical instructions for the new adhesive grade and adjust the equipment within the manufacturer's recommended operating range before testing.

  • Can I Switch to a PO Adhesive Without Cleaning the System?
Check with the adhesive supplier regarding compatibility and the recommended changeover procedure. Do not mix two adhesive products for trial purposes unless this has been specifically approved.

  • What Information Should I Provide for Adhesive Selection?
Provide details of the substrate, photos of the bond area, equipment model, production speed, and end-use conditions.

If you are experiencing problems such as edge lifting, stringing, or inconsistent adhesive beads, include photos or samples of the defects where possible.
